The Zechstein Sea extended about 250 million years ago over Germany and northern Europe. It has now disappeared, but its fossil salt deposits have formed a petrified inland sea, located in northwestern Europe, at approximately 1,500 m depth.
Magnesium chloride hexahydrate from these deposits has been mined in the north of the Netherlands since 2006. It is extracted by sending spring water which mixes with the petrified salt deposits and then is recovered from the surface.
